Your Parish Council

Firstly, thank you to Peter Edwards, Graham Bowland, David Greenwood and John Thornton for signing up as members of your Parish Council.

This is to be the last Parish Council newsletter you will receive for a while; this is because there are currently only 4 people on the Council rather than the required 6 which has lead to a review of tasks and for now the newsletter is something that can be put on hold. (You will still receive notifications regarding planning applications though.)

For your Parish Council to continue it must have 6 members, this is a legal requirement. Without a Parish Council you will lose local control over village assets such as the village greens, play area and allotments. There won’t be a voice that is listened to by HBC and NYCC in relation to planning, highway issues or policing.

Being a member of the Parish Council requires the individual to attend Parish Council meetings (approximately 4 per annum) and they should act solely in terms of public interest and with selflessness, integrity, openness, objectivity, and honesty. The time a councillor gives to the rule is within their control and can be very little if needs be.

Please can you all consider stepping up as we can’t afford to lose our Parish Council. Anyone willing to stand please contact Liz, our Parish Clerk  clerk@staveleyandcopgrovepc.org.uk

Abacus expansion

All residents within Staveley and Copgrove will have received a leaflet from the Parish Council regarding the latest planning application by Abacus. We strongly urge you to take the time to consider whether you believe that the continued expansion of the site is adversely affecting your community, whether you are concerned about road safety, traffic volumes, pollution, or the visual impact the buildings have. It is the opinion of your Parish Council that, due to it’s ever increasing size and consequent volume of vehicles, the location of such a large industrial unit is no longer appropriate in a countryside setting serviced by narrow country lanes and along roads which pass so closely to homes and the school within Staveley.

We are proud of our farming community and believe it needs protecting against further industrial development, should you agree please write to HBC commenting on this application.                        (ref 21/04189/FUL)

Improvements around Staveley

It has been a very protracted project however, finally, we can confirm the completion of all the improvement projects around the village which have mainly been funded by grants from Allerton Park Landscape and Cultural Heritage Fund (APLCHF). [Please look on the website for some photos of the improvements that have been completed]

These various projects saw the play area receive a vast amount of tidying up and some replanting. (subsequent replanting of the hedge was funded by the Woodland Trust). The phone box was refurbished, the Pinfold had a new gate made and fitted and the area around it was tidied up as was the area outside Glebe Farm. The oak on the green in front of the Royal Oak was replaced as were 5 trees along Main Street.

The estate fencing along Main Street was replaced, and the pavement and verge was cleared too. All this work has been possible following receipt of funds from APLCHF and others. Just short of £4,500 was raised from donations received from residents and this secured the balance of money being offered from APLCHF.

As the fencing project progressed through the pandemic Stuart Barton undertook all the work which our volunteers had planned to do but couldn’t. In addition to giving so much of his time Stuart Barton has also now funded the entire balance between the grant money received and the costs.

Due to Stuart’s generosity, we have been able to reallocate the funds raised from the generosity of our residents to replace some of the new trees which did not survive the dry summer, trim the trees outside the village hall and plant some replacement cherry trees.

All in all, a great success and hopefully all the new trees and hedges will thrive. Thank you to all who gave their time and or money!

Speeding traffic

Please be aware that the Parish Council have secured permission to instigate a speed watch scheme in Staveley. Soon volunteers will be recording speeding vehicles and reporting them to the police who will contact the offenders.
