Allerton Park Landscape and Cultural Heritage Fund Grants Update

Work Starts along Wath Lane, Staveley

Grant 1

The Parish Council received a grant of £9,176 from the Allerton Park Landscape and Cultural Heritage Fund (APLCHF) in October 2019 to carry out improvement works to the Jubilee Recreation Field, the village green west, the Pinfold and the phone box on Main Street housing the community defibrillator. The works to the Jubilee Recreation Field and village green west have now been completed. The new gate to the Pinfold is in production and expected to be installed by the end of December 2019. The phone box refurbishment has been postponed until the spring as wet weather at the scheduled time of the works prevented the contractor from starting.

Following all this work the areas are looking so much more cared for and especially the Jubilee Recreation Field which, if it weren’t for the weather would offer a wonderful place for children to play safely. In the spring a little further work will be needed there to remove the ivy and brambles from the hedge along the roadside plus planting a few new hedge plants to in-fill. Volunteers for this small project will be required. Please contact the Parish Council if you are willing to spare a Saturday morning in February to lend a hand.

Grant 2

The landowners of Glebe Farm, Staveley received a grant offer of £17,640 from the APLCHF in November 2019, to undertake boundary improvement works along Wath Lane/Main Street on the approach to Staveley. This grant represented 75% of the estimated project cost to replace the estate fencing and undertake tree maintenance work plus some new planting.

In order to secure the success of this project, the Parish Council undertook to raise the 25% balance. Thanks to the generosity of many residents, a couple of local businesses and the landowners, this shortfall has now been covered which means that all the funding is now in place to complete the works.

There were some conditions attached to this grant including:

  • finding the extra 25% before the grant would be released,
  • the need to repay APLCHF 75% of the amount received from selling the old fence for scrap,
  • that the fence is adequately insured and
  • that the landowners enter into an agreement with the Parish Council that the fence cannot ever be removed without the permission of the Parish Council.

Now that all the grant offer conditions have been met, work can commence. As we go to press (as they say) the tree work has started and the new planting will follow shortly. As a wonderful extra we have also been gifted some metal guards for the new trees which will compliment the fence and hopefully keep the sheep off the saplings. Later in the spring/early summer, once the lambs have vacated the field, the old fence will be removed, the verge will be improved and the footpath cleared. This work is being undertaken by the landowner with help from volunteers. Further updates on how you can help with this work will follow. Once the site is clear, the new fencing will be professionally installed.
