Local Government in North Yorkshire
The Parish Council appointed a new Parish Clerk / Responsible Financial Officer at its meeting on 9th February 2021. Liz Leatherbarrow starts in the role on 10th February 2021. Liz is also Deputy Clerk at Boroughbridge Town Council and lives in Harrogate.
Prior to the start of the pandemic affecting all our lives we, in Staveley, were able to establish a buddy scheme. The scheme is designed to offer assistance to any household within the community.
Although we are no longer in lockdown there are still households in need and there are still volunteers ready and willing to help with shopping, medicine collection, company and general support.

The government has signalled its determination to change the structure of local government in York and North Yorkshire. In effect this means that the existing districts, boroughs and county council will cease to exist and new structures will be formed.
Over the coming weeks, the Leaders of the district and borough councils in North Yorkshire will be preparing a bid for local government reorganisation.

As you may be aware, Staveley and Copgrove benefit from having an active Parish Council rather than as with some other villages nearby, only a Parish Meeting or village committee. Your PC is here to represent you and your interests, however unless we hear from you from time to time the only voice that will be heard is that of the Council members.
Please let us know if you have any opinion in relation to planning applications, currently there is another application by Abacus which, in the PC’s opinion, could lead to further increases in traffic through the village.
We provide a play area in Staveley (known as the Jubilee Recreation Field):
The benches around the villages are due for a refurbishment, are they in the right locations, do you use them, do we need any more? Once the building work reduces there will be a new bench outside Barley Court on Arkendale Road and the developers are also donating a new bench for the Jubilee Recreation Field.
We would also like to know of anyone in Staveley who would be interested in an allotment plot in the village. We currently have only two plots in the village, both of which are let, but there is anecdotal evidence of further demand for plots and some residents are known to have taken plots in surrounding areas. If we can establish and quantify demand from within the village, we can investigate the potential to meet it.

The playground is inspected annually by RoSPA and four times per year by a local specialist contractor. It is also visually inspected weekly by a team of local volunteers and stands on land rented annually from the Staveley Relief in Need Charity.

Description: Ex BT telephone box, now home to the village public defibrillator unit. The phobe box is a K6, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1936 and introduced to celebrate the King George V Silver Jubilee. It was probably installed under the ‘Jubilee Concession’, which meant kiosks were installed in every town and village with a Post Office. The K6 was 80 years old in 2016.

From the Archive: The seat when new in 1990
Description: An animal pound where stray livestock were impounded. Animals were kept in a dedicated enclosure, until claimed by their owners, or sold to cover the costs of impounding. The term pinfold is saxon in origin and common in the north of England. A village pound was a feature of most English medieval villages.

Further Information: In 2012, thanks to an initiative by Staveley resident Ken Barker, a rose garden was planted in land next to the Pinfold to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. In 2019 a new gate to the Pinfold was installed by D.Hargreaves (Blacksmith) of The Forge, Coneythorpe.
